Course overview
This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to test, commission and maintain backflow prevention devices in water services. It covers the identification of requirements, preparation of work, commissioning and maintenance activities and finalisation of work including documentation.
The Plumbing Industry Commission (PIC) will be in attendance on the final day of training to conduct the external theory and practical examination for those participants who wish to receive endorsement on their plumbing licence in backflow prevention as a specialised class of plumbing.
Course outcome
On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify sources and gather information relevant to testing, commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
- Apply safety and quality assurance requirements and demonstrate effective work methods relevant to testing, commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
- Test, commission and undertake maintenance of high, medium and low hazard backflow prevention devices in water services.
- Identify and complete all relevant documentation relevant to testing, commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
Course recognition
Participants successfully completing this course will receive a Statement of Attainment for CPCPWT4012A Commission and maintain backflow prevention devices.
Participants wishing to engage in further formal studies will receive credit for this unit where it forms part of any other accredited course or training package qualification.
Participants successfully completing the external theory and practical examination administered by the Plumbing Industry Commission (PIC) will receive endorsement on their plumbing licence in backflow prevention as a specialised class of plumbing (additional fees apply).
Target participants
- Registered and/or licensed plumbers wishing to gain endorsement on their plumbing industry licence for commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
- Newly qualified plumbers or completing apprentices wishing to develop a better understanding of backflow prevention processes including commissioning and maintenance of backflow prevention devices.
Participant entry requirements / prerequisites
Participants must hold water supply registration and/or licence. Evidence of current water supply registration/licence will be required.
There are no pre requisite training units for this unit of competency.
Participants require language, literacy and numeracy skills of a sufficient level to enable them to complete activities applicable to the following levels of the Australian Core Skills Framework:
- Learning Level 3
- Reading Level 4
- Writing Level 2
- Oral com. Level 3
- Numeracy Level 3
Duration
24 hours over three (3) consecutive days. This includes the four (4) hour external PIC examination.
Delivery arrangements
- three (3) consecutive days (24 hrs) including a four (4) hour externally supervised knowledge and practical assessment by the PIC
- plus approximately four (4) hours self directed learning prior to/or during course attendance.
Assessment arrangements
Unit assessment requires participants to:
- actively participate in class discussions
- complete a theory assessment
- successfully commission and test an RPZD valve and complete documentation
- successfully commission and test double check valve and complete documentation
- successfully commission and test vacuum breaker valve and complete documentation.
Additional fees
Additional fees apply to the application for endorsement. These will be invoiced separately by the Plumbing Industry Commission.
