Course overview
This course will provide participants with the skill and knowledge required to identify and establish a range of business structures and to identify and comply with the regulatory, legal, taxation and insurance requirements of a small business manage risk pertaining to the establishment and running of a small business.
Course outcome
On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
- identify appropriate legal business structures to meet the requirements of small businesses in a plumbing context.
- recognise legal and regulatory requirements of small business.
- develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements of small business.
- arrange and negotiate contracts in the context of a small plumbing business.
Course recognition
Participants successfully completing this course will receive a Statement of Attainment for BSBSMB401A Establish legal and risk management requirements of small business.
Participants wishing to engage in further formal studies will receive credit for this unit where it forms part of any other accredited course or training package qualification.
Target participants
- Registered and/or licensed plumbers wishing to develop skills in establishing and /or maintaining effective business acumen.
- Newly qualified plumbers or completing apprentices wishing to develop a better understanding of business structures and legal requirements.
Participant entry requirements / prerequisites
There are no pre requisites for this unit of competency.
Participants require language, literacy and numeracy skills of a sufficient level to enable them to complete activities applicable to the following levels of the Australian Core Skills Framework:
- Learning Level 4
- Reading Level 4
- Writing Level 3
- Oral com. Level 3
- Numeracy Level 4
Duration
60 hours over 20 weeks (evening delivery)
Delivery arrangements
The delivery of this course has been developed to offer greater flexibility to participants and reduce the amount of classroom based training. Course delivery will use a combination of face to face classroom training, flexible learning materials and self directed home based study.
Course delivery involves:
- One (1) evening per fortnight (3 hrs) over 20 weeks, plus
- 30 hrs self directed learning.
Assessment arrangements
Unit assessment requires participants to:
- actively participate in class discussions
- undertake a theory assessment
- complete Assessment task 1 - Case study on legal and administrative requirements
- complete Assessment task 2 - Written report on legislation, codes and regulatory requirements for small business
- complete Assessment task 3 - Written report on insurance requirements
- complete Assessment task 4 - Contracts and contractual obligations.
