Yarra Valley Water has entered into a partnership with Box Hill Institute (BHI) to offer a new and unique Diploma in Sustainable Operations – the first of its kind in Victoria.

Designed by industry for industry, the program presents the opportunity for businesses to upskill existing staff, providing them with a formal sustainability qualification.

A prime objective of the partnering arrangement established between Yarra Valley Water and Box Hill Institute is to provide engineering students within the Centre for Automotive, Transport and Engineering the opportunity to gain industry based learning experience, working within the Yarra Valley Water customer network on actual value-adding projects under the mentorship of Box Hill Institute trained personnel and industry specialists.


The fifteen month program, which kicks off in April 2012, will teach students how to manage the following processes in-house:

  • Measure and report carbon footprint
  • Mitigate identified wastes in your organisation
  • Use the internationally recognised lean manufacturing philosophy as a framework for processes
  • Triple bottom line reporting to improve sustainable competitiveness Conduct water audits within your business and across the value chain Ensure your energy use is efficient – perform energy audits to help inform your cost benefit analyses


On completion of this program, graduates will be able to work as a technical officer or specialist sustainability manager across a number of fields ranging from:

  • Energy/water/waste auditing
  • Regulatory reporting
  • Water treatment, storm and wastewater management
  • Resources management across the value chain
  • Solid and hazardous waste management
