Background
Information
The Master Plumbers’ and
Mechanical Services Association of Australia (MPMSAA) presented the first
Master Plumbers’ Training Awards in 1908.
Being the first of such plumbing awards instituted in Australia, those
first awards were well-received and widely recognised as an important addition
to the activities which furthered the reputation of the industry and
underscored the quality of the people who made their careers in its service.
The success of MPMSAA’s
scholarships is reflected in the calibre of the men and women who have been
award recipients in the past, and the contributions they have made to the
plumbing industry and the general community.
The Gold Medal and Training
Awards are held annually in July.
In 1908, the first medal presented was the Gold Medal, now named the
Andrew Letten Gold Medal and is the highest award provided by the Association. As the Plumbing Industry puts a great
emphasis on external examinations to ensure that high standards of competency
are maintained, the Gold Medal is presented to the plumbing apprentice who
receives the highest marks in all external examinations necessary to become a
registered plumber.
Through the years, more awards
have been established, recognising excellent achievements of plumbing
apprentices and secondary school students. Each award continues a long and proud tradition of
excellence, with many awards named after key figures in both the plumbing industry
and the wider community. An
example is the George Stone Educational Award which recognises George Stone who
was the first Gold Medal winner in 1908, and his excellent work in the
industry.
Previous year’s keynote speeches
and presentations have been made by former Governors-General and their wives;
The Honourable Bill Hayden AC, The Right Honourable Sir Ninian Stephen KG AK
GCMG GCVO KBE QC PC, The Honourable Sir William Deane AC KBE and Major General
Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC. Recent
presentations have also been made by The Prime Minister of Australia John
Howard and Mr John Landy AC CVO MBE former Governor of Victoria.
Recently, the Association
received the Wurreker Award for the Sir Rohan Delacombe Educational Award. The Wurreker Awards are an initiative
of the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc to recognise individuals
and organisations who achieve exceptional results in their areas of knowledge
and expertise under the Wurreker Strategy. The Wurreker Award was accepted on behalf of the
Association by Mr Austin McDermott, who in 1965 originally put forward the
suggestion of the Sir Rohan Delacombe Award which aims to assist bright young
indigenous students embarking on higher education.
Each award is sponsored by a
different company. Interestingly,
some awards are still sponsored today by the family companies whom they are
named after. The Albert Smith
Award (a winner of the Gold Medal in 1918), is sponsored by AE Smith & Son
Pty Ltd, and the Alfred Atherton Educational Award is sponsored by AE Atherton
& Sons Pty Ltd.
